Fixed Braces for Children and Teens
How Fixed Braces Work
Crowded Teeth
When there isn’t enough space in the mouth, teeth can overlap or twist. Braces create the room needed to align them properly.
Overbites and Underbites
Braces can correct misaligned bites, ensuring the upper and lower teeth meet correctly, which improves function and appearance.
Spacing Issues
Gaps between teeth can be closed with braces, giving your child a more even smile.
Crooked Teeth
Braces help straighten teeth for better alignment, improving both the smile’s aesthetics and oral health.
Benefits of Fixed Braces
Precision
Fixed braces offer more control over the movement of the teeth compared to removable aligners, making them ideal for complex orthodontic cases.
Constant Effectiveness
Since they are fixed in place, braces work 24/7, ensuring continuous progress and eliminating the need to remember to wear them, unlike removable options.
Customisation
Today’s braces come in a variety of styles, including metal, ceramic, and coloured options, allowing your child to personalise their experience.
What to Expect During Treatment
Initial Consultation
During the initial visit, we will assess your child’s teeth and bite. If braces are recommended, we’ll discuss the treatment plan and answer any questions you may have.
Placement of Braces
The brackets are carefully bonded to the teeth, and the wire is threaded through them to begin the process of moving the teeth into their correct positions.
Adjustments
Periodic appointments are necessary to adjust the braces and ensure that teeth are shifting as expected. These appointments usually occur every 4–6 weeks.
Duration of Treatment
The length of treatment varies, but fixed braces typically remain on for 18 months to 2 years, depending on the complexity of the case.
Caring for Fixed Braces
Brushing and Flossing
Brush after every meal and floss carefully to remove food particles that can get trapped in the braces.
Avoiding Certain Foods
Sticky or hard foods can damage the braces, so it’s important to avoid items like gum, caramel, and popcorn.
Regular Check-Ups
Continue with regular dental check-ups to monitor oral health during treatment.
