Dr Alaa Bani Hani is a consultant in paediatric dentistry at Kings College Hospital. She holds a split post between Kings College Hospital and the Community Dental Services (CDSs) in the South of London. She is the chair of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry Teacher’s Branch, and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons-Edinburg Speciality Advisory Board in Paediatric Dentistry. She is also a member of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry Media team.

Following her graduation from the dental school in 2006, Alaa pursued a career in paediatric dentistry where she completed clinical masters (2010) and PhD (2016) in paediatric dentistry and in 2021, she completed NIHR-Funded A clinical Lectureship and specialty training in paediatric dentistry from University of Leeds.

In 2021, she moved to London for her consultant training in Eastman Dental Institute (University College of London) and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. In 2023, she became a consultant in Paediatric Dentistry.

Her main areas of clinical interest are caries prevention and management, especially using minimal intervention dentistry in caries management among anxious children as well as the management of traumatic dental injuries. In addition, Alaa is very experienced in treating nervous children, and children with special needs, both in chair, using the inhalation sedation (happy gas), and general anaesthesia. She strongly feels that children deserve the best quality dental care and that what she strives for in on a daily basis.

Alaa is a regular speaker at both national and international conferences, and she has contributed to major teaching textbooks and peer-reviewed publications in paediatric dentistry. Her most recent publication ‘Minimal intervention dentistry for managing carious lesions into dentine in primary teeth: an umbrella review’ has contributed to the development of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry guidelines on caries management in children. Alaa is a co-author on these guidelines.
